Let's Fight Homelessness among Serious Mental Illness

The Residential Community Proposition

MindSpan Wellness proposes to create “a community within a community” where young adults living with a serious mental illness can feel comfortable, safe, independent and, as equally important, a contributing member of society without feeling ostracized or judged by their peers.

We are committed to providing at least 50% of our residency to those that are dealing with, or have recently experienced, homelessness and are diagnosed with a serious mental illness.   It is our goal to help these individuals create an maintain stable housing, care and treatment, while helping them define long-term personal and professional goals.

There are four key components to the program as a whole :

  1. A secure assisted living facility where 2-4 individuals can live communally in a dormitory setting. These would be apartments of 2-4 bedrooms, giving each individual their own private space, with shared bathrooms and living spaces.  Additionally, depending upon the community, we would develop a collection of tiny homes where some individuals could live more independently.
  2. A centralized community building that will offer on-site appointments with visiting medical professionals, as well as counseling sessions.
  3. An educational building that will offer therapeutic as well as educational programs, such as therapy through art and music, and various IT based education and occupational training programs.
  4. Work opportunities within our community micro-farm and gardens , according to their individual abilities, with animals and agriculture. The by-products of which will be used within the community as well as be sold at local farmer’s markets.  In addition, we will collaborate with community businesses to offer additional work training and opportunities off-site with transportation as needed.

A residential facility promotes improved and sustained mental health in a nurturing environment. Programs will be based upon a comprehensive approach to therapy and individual self-improvement, not just medication. They will be able to benefit from :

  • Personal Responsibility through Independent Living
  • Professional, Volunteer & Peer-to-Peer Support
  • Routine and Regular Structure
  • Development of personal and work skills
  • Contribution to the Community
  • Overall improvement of self-esteem and a higher quality of life
